Mt. Abang 2151m

Mt. Abang is not as famous as Mt. Batur or Mt. Agung, but it's located between them. As it is not a volcano, so the trek is in the forest. The start point is located in -8.369231, 115.503197. To get there we need to drive to Kintamani first, about 1 hour in the north of Ubud. I started at 5 am from Ubud, with a friend of mine, an Estonian girl. We stopped at Kintamani to see the sunrise view.
There is the mountain we are going to
Mt. Batur just before sunrise
After sunrise we drove to the start point, the road quality was pretty bad and it was misty so I couldn't see more than 3 meters in the front. There will be a sign "WELL COME TO GUNUNG ABANG" on the tree in the end of the road which is also the start point.

My friend told me that it will take about 2 hours up, and we did 1 hour 37 minutes including some stops for pictures and drink. The track is pretty slippery in some points, steep as well. There is a flat open view point with tiny temple. From here you can see the top.

A colorful tree
The trees here are interesting, feels like in the middle of old rain forest. Most of them are pines covered by moss. Some fallen trees are on the track which actually helped  us to climb the slippery part.

Cloud covered Kintamani
We reach the top in sunny morning, before 9am. The view was amazing! We could see Mt.Batur, the beautiful valley and slightly Mt.Agung in the other side. After taking pictures, we sat on the edge looking at the view and eating our breakfast.

Beautiful valley
Just another nice view from the top

Just before we leaving, the place became misty, but still beautiful. We met a group with 20 people on half way down. And also in the end, we met a noisy off road motorbike community, they made the road worse!

We need to give a way for bikers while they ruins our track
We stopped at Kintamani view point once again for the view and then drive back home to Ubud.
That's Mt.Abang where we went

There are some things that you need to prepare :
  • Proper shoes, make sure that the bottom is not flat.
  • Headlamp in case you want to start early to catch the sunrise
  • Warm clothes in early morning, light one if it's sunny daytime
  • Enough food and water just like a breakfast
  • No need guide if you get used to mountain, the track are clear and safe. Unless you need somebody to lift you up or carry your backpack
  • Check the weather forecast. In rainy season could be more slippery and there are leeches.
  • Police checking almost everyday just before Kintamani in daytime, make sure that you have driving lisence and vehicle's paper. Unless they will ask you some amount of money.
  • There are some check points before enter Kintamani and Abang, they won't open before sunrise though. But i heard it's pretty expensive for foreigners. You can avoid them by saying that you are going to Besakih and only passing this area.
  • Bring your camera! Too many beautiful view to skip
